Outstanding Community Service Award

The Theta Upsilon Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma at Winston-Salem State University didn’t just host a service event this year; they built an entire pipeline of care, from donation to delivery. Their initiative, Project Nourish, began with a month-long clothing drive across campus and the community, but collecting donations was only the first step. Chapter members then spent hours at a local laundromat washing, sorting, and organizing every item by size and gender, ensuring that whatever they gave away would be clean, dignified, and ready to use.

The effort culminated in a distribution event hosted at a local church, where families in need received clothing, hygiene products, and food resources, all made possible through the Chapter’s partnerships with other service-minded organizations in the area. It was, as the judges noted, exactly the kind of complex, multi-stage project that reflects real chapter-wide commitment rather than a single afternoon of goodwill.

What set Project Nourish apart was the follow-through at every stage. Rather than simply collecting and handing off donations, Theta Upsilon members invested their own time into preparing each item with care, then showed up in person to distribute food, hygiene products, and clothing directly to families who needed them. The Chapter’s willingness to partner with other local service organizations along the way only widened the initiative’s reach and impact.

Project Nourish is a reminder that community service is rarely just about the size of a check written; it’s about the care taken in every step in between. Theta Upsilon’s members put in that care at every stage, from the first donation bin to the last bag handed out.
